In my own words, I makes things and makes things happen. In other words, I'm a conceptual artist and writer based in East Anglia. I'm research and project based, working across painting, installation, film, performance, text and drawing. My work focuses on examining life, to highlight poetics and connections. I can help with research, funding applications, facilitating shows, working with galleries, mentorship, writing, theory. I received a scholarship to study Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts, graduating in 2020 with 3 awards. In 2019 I was selected for a mentorship year at Mall Galleries focusing on collaboration and exhibition facilitation. I have since been on 3 residencies including at Antony Gormley’s estate (2021 and 2022), had writing published by UEA Publishing Project (2020), Creeping Expansion Magazine (2021) and Mall Galleries (2019), Artwork featured in The Social Distance Art Project 'New Graduates' catalogue (2021), Elephant Magazine (2020) and Art Pulse Magazine (2018) and have exhibited nationally, most notably at Norwich and Norfolk Festival (2021), East Gallery (2019) and Mall Galleries (2019). In 2021, I won the Firstsite Collectors Bursary Award and in 2022 I won an A-N Bursary Award. I have a range of experience across the arts-- as a Gallery Assistant at East Gallery (2019), Snape Maltings (2021), Visitor Assistant at Britten Pears Arts (2021). I currently split my time between Norwich Theatre Royal in the Box Office (2021-), Norwich Festival as a Community Artist (2022-) where I help facilitate arts activities for young people and OUTPOST Gallery (2021-) as a steering committee member, programming and delivering the activities and events for the gallery. I'm also a freelance workshop facilitator and practising artist. It's all about spinning plates.

I have been an arts educator for the past 20 years including 15 as Head of a very large Visual Arts department and currently I guest lecture at Leeds Arts University. I give talks on my practice and have interviewed artists for the The Photographers Gallery London educational events. I am filmmaker and editor and run workshops in both as well as analogue photography, book production and oil painting. I am an interdisciplinary artist that uses practice-based research to make work about things I don’t understand. Primarily using sound and film my work explores misunderstanding, especially in relation to the nature of time. I create live and prerecorded audiovisual performances and installations that use elements of pop music and combines together old and new technologies. I utilise unwanted musical instruments together with discarded technology such as old iPhones, obsolete sound equipment and damaged television to create an immersive and disorienting experience.

I am open to tutoring on a variety of different topics connected to my work. Thinking about the advice I can give I would probably be most beneficial to those just starting their freelancing careers, or those seeking to get into public art. I can only share the experiences I have collected over my time at university and as a freelancer but I am happy to share the tools and resources I used to get where I am. I think street art and public sector illustration can seem quite separate from the curriculum. Some, who have approached me, share how it appears unapproachable and unclear how to start out. The only way I learnt was by asking others so I am more than happy to be a helping hand. Ideas: Getting into public art: applications, proposals, CV, experience / portfolio etc. Murals: materials, equipment, techniques, process etc. Early career advice: my own experience and tips I would share Students: taking advantage of university and career development

Art Foundation, BA Fine Art (Uni of Leeds), working at Assembly House supporting professional development for artists and supporting artists within projects (curatorially and assisting). My work facilitates a connection between the physical and spiritual through feminist structures, ritual and performance. Fantastical narratives act as a vehicle to create a fictional space, away from patriarchy, and wield 'otherness'. I use natural materials and environments to steer as far from the patriarchy as possible. My work exists within its own ecosystem, world, history or fiction. I use sculpture, film, performance and photography mainly, with concept leading before material, and materials acting as devices within a concept. I have exhibited solo at Assembly House and in group shows such as Ones to Watch at Sunnybank Mills, New Contemporaries 2021 at Firstsite Colchester and South London Gallery, the Ingram Prize shortlist at Unit 1 Gallery and others. I'm also part of YSI Sculpture Network 2022.

"I am a cross-disciplinary artist who engages with forms and ideas through the studio and critical theory. It is of importance that my research based practice runs alongside my studio concerns, for it keeps things dynamic and interesting. Tom Bull makes sculptures in an absurd attempt to capture the lived experience within these dark, strange and untrustworthy times. Through a landscape of folk, rural living, modernity and rituals, he investigates the tension and slippage between fiction and representation, violence and sensitivity, truth and mythology. With a wide range of tools and materials borrowed from architecture, model making, carpentry, aspirational design, preservation, farming and forestry, Bull employs a sculptural practice that confronts and manipulates traditions, time periods, lore and genre. His most recent work interrogates country life by challenging issues around land, loss, community, wealth, access, labour and violence. " Sculptural techniques, how to approach and incorporate research into your practice, theory around ruralism, modernity, capitalism, folk, horror, craft, pedagogy and tradition. I have also written two in depth dissertations (both marked with a high distinctions/firsts) on hermeneutics and folk horror in contemporary culture.
